The North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences was founded in 1987 and was formally opened by Smt. Sonia Gandhi, Chairperson of the UPA Government, on March 5, 2010. The institute had previously operated out of its current location in Mawdiangdiang.

The MBBS program at NEIGRIHMS began in 2008 with an annual intake of 50 students. The postgraduate programs in the following four disciplines—anesthesia, microbiology, obstetrics & gynaecology, and pathology—began in the year 2009. Additional postgraduate courses in radiodiagnosis and imaging, general surgery, general medicine, and anatomy have also begun at NEIGRIHMS.

Additionally, the NEIGRIHMS College of Nursing offers M.Sc. and B.Sc. nursing programs. These classes first began in 2006. NEIGRIHMS is a functional hospital that provides patients with low-cost medical care in addition to being an instructional facility for postgraduate and undergraduate medical training.

The World Health Organization, UNICEF, and other international health organisations are coordinated with by the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences in Shillong, which has the responsibility of being the highest coordination centre for the Central Government's health care policy for Indian citizens.

What Has Changed at Shillong's NEIGRIHMS?

  • The number of students accepted into the MBBS program at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences, Shillong, will double starting in 2021. The number of students admitted annually has increased from 50 to 100.

Degree Program in MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery)

The NEIGRIHMS began offering the MBBS program in 2008 with an annual enrollment of 50 students. According to the Medical Council of India's (MCI) academic calendar, the MBBS program lasts four years and six months. A one-year, required rotating internship program follows it. *An entrance exam is given to fill 18 seats under the North-Eastern open category. The state governments of Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Meghalaya, and Nagaland each nominate candidates for the seats listed under those respective states.
