About Bachelor of Technology

Bachelor of Technology (BTech) is a professional undergraduate engineering degree programme awarded to candidates after they complete four years of study in the field. One of the most sought-after degrees in India is engineering, which is provided by a large number of educational institutions. JEE Main and JEE Advanced are the most popular entrance exams for BTech admissions. and B.Tech for working professionals programs recognize the unique challenges faced by those already entrenched in their careers. They offer flexible scheduling, often involving evening or weekend classes, allowing professionals to balance their job commitments while pursuing higher education. For course admission, students may also take a variety of entrance exams at the state and private levels in addition to those offered at the national level. The minimum requirement for admission to a BTech programme is a grade of 12 in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Every admission exam and institute, however, has extra requirements. Some institutions also give admission to their programmes based on a candidate's performance in the class 12 board examinations, or on merit.

List of BTech Specialisations

In India, a BTech degree is offered across various specialisations. There are a few prominent specializations, such as:

Computer Science Engineering Mechanical Engineering Chemical Engineering
Aerospace Engineering Civil Engineering Electrical Engineering
Ceramic Engineering Electronics & Communication Engineering Marine Engineering
Metallurgical Engineering Petroleum Engineering Electronics & Electrical Engineering

While each of these specializations presents promising opportunities across a range of professions, computer science engineering is currently one of the most sought-after programs. Prestigious engineering institutions such as the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Indian Institute of Information Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), and some top central universities have set high entrance exam cutoff scores to select candidates for this program.

Distinguishing Between a BE and a BTech Degree:

The orientation offered by the Bachelor in Engineering (BE) degree is quite comparable to that of the BTech curriculum. In fact, the admission requirements, topics covered by recruiters, and even the job descriptions provided during placements are often so similar that students sometimes question their differences. The primary contrast between these two degree programs lies in the subjects taught and the program's specific focus. The following table summarises the differences.

Qualifications for BE/BTech

The following criteria must be met in order to be admitted to any BTech programme:

  • Candidates must have passed the class 12 exam with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as their main subjects from an accredited board.
  • Additionally, they must have received a minimum of 60% overall in the disciplines mentioned above.
  • The majority of admission decisions are made in light of the student's performance on the entrance exam.
  • Please be aware that different institutions will have different requirements for BTech eligibility.

BTech entrance exams

In India, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and the National Board of Accreditation regulate technical programs, including BTech (NBA). Admission to B.Tech programs requires engineering entrance exams at national, state, and institution levels. The five prominent engineering entrance exams that many candidates take each year are:

  • JEE Main- is the entrance test for BTech admissions to NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. It is administered by the National Testing Agency. Paper 1 (BE/BTech) and Paper 2 (BArch/BPlan) are the two papers that make up JEE Main.
  • JEE Advanced- For BTech admissions to IITs, there is a national entrance test called JEE Advanced. To take the JEE Advanced exam, candidates must first be JEE Main qualifiers.
  • VITEEE- The Vellore University of Technology (VIT) and its many campuses provide admission into the BTech programmes through VITEEE, one of the most well-known private institute entrance exams.
  • MHT CET - Students may apply for admission to BTech programmes in the state of Maharashtra's BTech colleges through MHT CET.
  • TS EAMCET- Students may be admitted to Telangana state institutions through TS EAMCET based on their performance in the entrance test.
