As the first engineering college in the then-Travancore State, the College of Engineering, Trivandrum, was founded in 1939. As the ruler of the then-Travancore state, Sri Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma, the college owes some of the credit for being founded because the first courses were held on July 3, 1939, under his reign. At first, the College was located in the Chief Engineer's former office and residence (present PMG Office). The first Principal was a Britishman named Maj. T.H. Mathewman. When it first opened as a constituent college of Travancore University, the college's initial intake for degree and diploma programs in the civil, mechanical, and electrical branches totaled 21 students per program. The College administration came under the supervision of the Keralan government with the creation of the Directorate of Technical Education in the late 1950s. In 1960, the College was moved to its current 125-acre expansive location.
The College today has about 3500 students, 285 teaching staff, and 290 non-teaching personnel, and eight full departments that provide eight undergraduate, 19 postgraduate, and doctoral programs through the University of Kerala. The College's student body has grown throughout the years. The College also offers evening courses, B.Tech, B.Arch, M.Tech, M.Plan, MCA, and MBA degrees.
Since its founding, the college has remained a preeminent institution for engineering education in India. In the early 1990s, the College of Engineering in Trivandrum was ranked among the top 10 engineering colleges in India, per a survey funded by the Department of Science and Technology of the Indian government. When it comes to the calibre of its graduates and the number of top jobs they have, the college is among the best in the nation. The College is the most sought-after engineering college in the state by applicants for engineering degree programs due to its prominence in academics and extracurricular activities.

Process of CET Placement
The Trivandrum College of Engineering has a solid placement track record and has done a respectable job of assisting students in finding the right prospects for them. A brief discussion is done with the students to go through the several paths they can choose based on their interests. There are several of these fields, some of which include research fields, software development, and core engineering fields.
After that, training sessions are provided in order to inspire students to pursue entrepreneurship and mentor potential business owners. On a regular basis, career counselling and interactive seminars are held. They assist students in staying current on advancements in their areas of interest. The CGPU provided by the College of Engineering aids in the development of students' technical and soft skills.
Students participate in mock group discussions, interviews, and personality development programs to hone their communication abilities. It should be mentioned that the CET Trivandrum placement cell works with recognised organisations like the Kerala Startup Mission, CET-TBI, and other similar student clubs to support and mentor students interested in entrepreneurship through its Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development Cell (IEDC).
